Ford Madox Brown studied in the Low Countries and Paris and, in 1845, visited Rome where he came under the influence of the German Nazarene painters. Between 1840 and the late 1850s he exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a founding partner and designer of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. (1861-74).
