Edward Matthew Ward was a painter. He entered the Royal Academy schools in 1835 and the following year he went abroad for further study, visiting Paris and Venice on the way to Rome, where he spent three years. Ward's first work of any consequence was Cimabue and Giotto, which he sent back to the Royal Academy show of 1839.
