In 1870 the National Portrait Gallery moved from Great George Street, Westminster to the arcades of the Royal Horticultural Society gardens in South Kensington. Scharf executed a number of sketches and watercolours recording the arrangement of the portraits on the eve of the Gallery's second move to the Bethnal Green Museum, in 1885.
