by Cyril Flower, 1st Baron Battersea
Sculptor; a leading figure in the revival of British sculpture with a Renaissance-inspired feeling for the subtleties of form and texture, and for exquisite jewel-like detail. He designed the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus and the Duke of Clarence's tomb but later went bankrupt and retired to Bruges in disgrace. After the First World War Gilbert came back to England and enjoyed a productive old age.
