Howard began her writing career with The Beautiful Visit in 1950 and was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for her first novel. Shortly afterwards, she collaborated with the writer Robert Aickman on the collection of short stories We Are for the Dark in 1951. Howard is best known for her critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical series The Cazelet Chronicles, which explore three generations of an English family between 1937-1947.
