In 1867, he began as a reporter on the staff of Saunders's Newsletter, a Dublin paper, before moving to London as sub-editor of the Daily Telegraph. After spending some years as a freelance journalist, he was elected MP in the 1880 general election; he remained in parliament for nearly fifty years until his death.
