Chalmers was ordained as a minister in 1803. After reading Wilberforce's Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System (1797), he adopted the evangelical position. His evangelical preaching made him famous in Glasgow. In 1823, he took the Chair of Moral Philosophy at St. Andrews University, later becoming Professor of Divinity at Edinburgh University.
