After leaving school in 1881, Lewis Vernon Harcourt began working as private secretary to his father, Liberal MP William Vernon Harcourt, who at the time was Home Secretary. Harcourt acted in this capacity until shortly before his father's death in 1904, when he also entered Parliament as a Liberal MP. When Campbell-Bannerman formed his government in 1905, Harcourt became first commissioner of works, and a privy councillor.
