Parker preached his first sermon on a village green in 1848 and was enrolled as a lay preacher in the Methodist circuit. In 1869 he began his ministry at the oldest non-conformist church in London, the Poultry Chapel, Cheapside. It was not in a flourishing condition but was soon filled with eager congregations.
