Born in the family residence of the Nawabs of Pataudi in Delhi, he was related to the great Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib and Pakistan's first prime minister, Liaqat Ali Khan. He was educated and coached in cricket at Lahore's Chief's College (later renamed Aitchison College) and at Balliol College, Oxford.
