Sooty began his show business career in 1948 when he was purchased by the one-time electrical engineer turned amateur pianist and magician, Harry Corbett, for 7/6d on Blackpool's North pier. Originally named 'Teddy', with the addition of chimney soot to his ears and nose to enhance his character, he was re-christened and appeared on BBC's talent night joining Harry Corbett's magic act.
