Jackson made her stage debut in 1957 and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1963. She has appeared in productions including Marat/ Sade (1966), Strange Interlude (1985) and Macbeth (1988). Jackson played Queen Elizabeth I in the TV series Elizabeth R (1971) and her films have included Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), The Return of the Soldier (1983) and A Touch of Class (1973) for which she won the Best Actress award at the Oscars.
