Born and educated in Austria, Bauer was trained at the Schonbrunn Imperial Gardens in Vienna. Bauer was persuaded by Sir Joseph Banks, who recognised his artistic talent, to come and work for him at Kew Gardens. Together, with his brother Ferdinand, Franz worked as botanical artist in the Herbarium at Kew from 1790 onward. The Bauer brothers rank amongst the greatest of botanical artists in their scientific approach to detail and deftness of execution.
