Hemans's work was widely read in Britain and America between 1820 and 1835, even outselling Byron. Sentimental poems such as Casabianca ('The boy stood on the burning deck') and The Homes of England were characterised by Sir Walter Scott as 'too many flowers, too little fruit'.
