Furnivall joined the Philological Society in 1847 and served as its Honorary Secretary from 1853 until his death, in which capacity he laid the foundations for the Oxford English Dictionary. At a meeting of the society in 1858 he presented a 'Proposal for the Publication of a New English Dictionary', and he served on the committee that designed the dictionary's format.
