Playwright and barrister and in his early years also an actor and journalist. Murphy wrote over twenty farces, comedies and tragedies including Three Weeks after Marriage (1764) and Know Your Own Mind (1777). A friend of Dr Johnson from 1754 and a member of the Club, it was he who was responsible for first introducing Johnson to Henry and Hester Thrale. He wrote a Life of Garrick (1801) and an Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson (1792).
