Art historian and novelist. An authority on 18th-century painting, she was the first woman Slade Professor at Cambridge from 1967 until 1968 and a Reader at the Courtauld Institute of Art from 1977 until 1988. Author of Watteau (1968) and Jacques-Louis David (1981). She later turned to fiction writing; her novels include the Booker prize-winning Hotel du Lac (1984), Brief Lives (1990) and The Bay of Angels: a Novel (2001).
