Sir George Scovell entered the Army in 1798. In 1807, he took part in the Peninsular War. He was in the Quartermaster-General's department where he was responsible for deciphering encoded messages that were captured from French troops and agents. Scovell saw active service in the Waterloo campaign as assistant quartermaster general and during the subsequent occupation of France he was charged with keeping the peace between the troops and the population. He was awarded with the Waterloo medal and the Russian Order of St Vladimir.
