attributed to Richard Westmacott
A treasure trove of ancient ruins, Old Master paintings and antique statues, Rome was full of inspiration for the young and ambitious British artist looking to augment his repertoire of subjects. This sketch by resident British sculptor, Richard Westmacott is a study for his debut sculpture at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1827, one year after his return to England. With classically-inspired drapery and twisted pose, Westmacott's female figure takes its cue from the ancient statuary he would have studied in Italy.
