Operating as one artist, Gilbert Proesch (b.1943) and George Passmore (b.1942) met in the 1960s, when they were both studying at St Martin's School of Art, London. They have lived and worked together as Gilbert & George since 1968. Moving to the working-class neighbourhood of Spitalfields, London, they revolted against art's elitism, naming their work 'Art for all' and declaring themselves 'living sculptures'.
