The genre and history painter Edward Bird was one of the leading artists in the group who became known as the Bristol School. Bird spent most of his career working in Bristol and exhibiting in London. He became historical painter to Princess Charlotte in 1813. A large exhibition of Bird's work was held at the Bristol Fire Office in 1820, the year after his premature death. This was the first substantial retrospective show to be devoted to a single artist outside of London.
