Theatre and literary critic Arthur Bingham Walkley reviewed books in periodicals before turning to theatre. He is best known for his writing as theatre critic for the Times, where he worked from 1899 for twenty six years. At a time at which English drama was beginning to break free from dramatic conventions, Walkley saw his task as analysing his sensations in the presence of art, not judging it by rule.
