This blanket is printed with a section of a large, 8 x 3 metre, tapestry I designed as part of an exhibition entitled Who are You? at the National Portrait gallery. Each of the works in the show is an image about the nature of identity.
The tapestry, entitled Comfort Blanket, i see as a portrait of Britain to wrap your self up in, a giant banknote, full of things we love to hate. A friend whose family had walked out of Hungary fleeing the Soviets in 1956 said her mother referred to Britain as her 'security blanket'. As their plane came in to land in the UK the tannoy relayed a message from the Queen saying 'Welcome to Britain you are now in a safe country'. people still come to our country for its stability, safety and rule of law. We should be proud of that.
The section on this blanket shows a British citizen surrounded by core values and institutions, some universally good, some quite particular o our country.
