He was a shoemaker's son and was apprenticed to a house painter. At the same time he was taught by a local portrait painter. In 1834 he stowed away on a brig and visited the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1836 on the strength of a history painting, he was financed by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/person\/mp124443\"\u003eWilliam Ramsay Maule, Lord Panmure\u003c\/a\u003e, to leave home and attend the Royal Academy Schools.
