William Pitt Amherst was appointed Governor-General of India in 1823. In 1824 he declared war on the King of Burma who was threatening to invade Bengal. A successful expedition led by Sir Archibald Campbell secured the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826. Amherst was made an earl for his handling of the situation but was forced by ill health to return to England in 1828.
