Physicist and electrical engineer. Born in Lancaster, Fleming studied at St John's College, Cambridge. Whilst Professor of Electrical Engineering at University College London (1885-1926), he invented the Thermionic Valve (1904), which became widely used in the rapidly developing world of television, radio and early computing. Fleming was also a pioneer in the application of electricity to heating and lighting on a large scale. He was knighted in 1929.
