Scottish born Lauder was initially employed as a miner, but quickly gained a reputation as a singer and comedian at local concert parties, and turned professional in 1895. He is best remembered for his songs I Love A Lassie, Roamin' In The Gloamin and the enduring Keep Right On To The End Of The Road, which he wrote in 1916 after his only son, Captain John Lauder, was killed in action.
