In 1917 Walter Stoneman, chief operator for J Russell & Sons, became the first official photographer for the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Record. Over the following forty years he photographed over 6000 mainly male subjects, suggested by the photographer and approved by the Trustees. In his Who's Who entry Stoneman described his recreation as 'studying human nature'.
