Gubbay started organising his own promotions at small venues in 1966; by the end of that decade he was developing shows for the South Bank Centre and later the Royal Albert Hall. With the opening of the Barbican Centre in 1982, he was able to extend the number of London concerts, introducing classical music to new audiences through popular programming and star performers.
