Polish-British painter Josef Herman studied at Warsaw School of Art (1930-31). In 1938 he went to Brussels and then, with the prospect of imminent Nazi invasion, fled to Glasgow in 1940. He moved to London in 1943 holding his first exhibition at the Reid and Lefevre Gallery the same year. He received an OBE in 1981 and was elected a Royal Academician in 1990.
