John Pitt was the eldest son of William Pitt the Elder and the elder brother of William Pitt the Younger. He entered the army in 1778 and his brother appointed him First Lord of the Admiralty later the same year. Chatham retired from the Admiralty in 1794 but remained in the Cabinet, as Lord Privy Seal and then as President of the Council, until his resignation in 1801.
