John Murray started his career in the family publishing house in 1828. His first major publishing initiative was to compile handbooks of continental countries he had visited, containing information on architecture, geology and many practical details. The series were hugely successful and set the model for future travel guides. Murray became head of the firm in 1843, and achieved considerable success in the firm's chosen niches of travel, history, biography and memoirs. In 1859, Murray published Charles Darwin's Origin of Species.
