Previously styled Lord Burghersh, Fane succeeded to the earldom in 1774. In 1782, he eloped with Sarah Anne Child, the only child and heir of banker Robert Child. The two were married at Gretna Green and Child consequently cut his daughter out of his will. While at Cambridge Westmorland had formed a friendship with William Pitt, which was later resumed in parliament.
