Having studied under Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music, Howells' interest in Tudor music was inspired by Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. He devoted himself to editing Tudor church music and composing many chamber and choral works including Piano Quartet (1916) and Hymnus Paradisi (1938).
