The elder son of Alfred Tennyson. From 1874, he devoted his life to his family, acting as private secretary to his father and accompanying him on his travels. In 1883 he became a councillor of the Imperial Federation League, a lobby group set up to promote imperialist ideas. It was this connection, as well as the Tennyson name, that led the Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain, to offer Tennyson the position of Governor of South Australia in 1899.
