A student of archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler, Kenyon excavated sites both in Britain, including Verulamium (St Albans), and in the Middle East . She first went to the Middle East in the 1930s, introducing British methods of excavation. The Second World War and its aftermath kept her in Britain, digging and helping to found the Institute of Archaeology at London University, where she was lecturer in Palestinian archaeology and acting Director.
