Cuban-born Acosta started dancing at the age of nine. He made his American stage debut as the Prince in The Nutcracker. He was the National Ballet of Cuba's Principal Dancer (from 1994) and the first black principal dancer at The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden (1998). Acosta has performed with some of the world's greatest companies including Paris Opera, the Bolshoi, ABT, and England's Royal Ballet, dancing almost every classical role from Macmillan to Balanchine as well as more contemporary roles.
