Child-Villiers succeeded to his father's titles and estates at the age of fourteen while still at school. An enthusiastic athlete, he represented Oxford in the mile race at the first Oxford versus Cambridge athletics meeting in 1865. In later life, he was prominent in athletics administration. Child-Villiers served as a Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria between 1875 and 1877, and in 1889 became Paymaster General in the Salisbury government.
