by Henry Bone, after Alexander Pope
A collector and designer, Hope belonged to a rich family of Amsterdam bankers who fled to England in 1794 when Holland was invaded by France. In addition to collecting Greek vases and classical and oriental antiquities, Hope designed his own furniture, ceramics, wallpaper and paint schemes. These were publicised in his book, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807), which was influential in promoting Greek and Egyptian styles as the height of fashion in interior decoration.
