Fiennes grew up in South Africa before studying at Eton. He joined the Army in 1963 and served in the Cold War. In 1970 he received the Sultan's Bravery Medal and married Ginny Pepper. Their Transglobe Expedition saw them reach both Poles, cross the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans and circumnavigate the world by its polar axis.
