Novelist, poet and children's author. Born in Sussex, Godden's upbringing in India heavily influenced her writing. She was prolific and many of her novels have been adapted for film and television, most notably Black Narcissus (1939), a psychological drama about a convent in the Himalayas, and The Greengage Summer(1958). Her children's book The Diddakoi won the Whitbread Award in 1972.
