One of the most celebrated painters of the eighteenth century, the German-born Zoffany came to London in 1760. He achieved success with his theatrical portraits and conversation pieces and was a founder member of the Royal Academy. Working in India during the 1780s, his portraits record the social and domestic life of the British in India.
