Politician and soldier, Barré was born in Dublin to French parents. He entered the army and fought alongside General Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec, 1759. Entering Parliament in 1761, he gained a fearsome reputation as a scourge of corruption and a champion of the American colonies. His phrase 'Sons of Liberty' became a Patriot slogan during the American War of Independence, 1775-82.
