One of six poses from the 1934 sitting with Howard Coster, self-styled 'photographer of men'. In the 1930s Herbert Read lived at No.3 The Mall, Parkhill Road, Hampstead, where he was a neighbour of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. He is seen here in an interior which includes a table designed by Marcel Breuer (1902-81) and Ben Nicholson's Collage with Spanish Postcard (1933, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan) and a small Hepworth sculpture.
