Holland was at the heart of Whig politics and social life and was committed to the reform of civil and religious liberties. However, he owned three sugar plantations in Jamaica on which enslaved Africans were forced to work. His wife, Elizabeth, also owned a substantial West Indian fortune which caused Holland to adopt the name Vassall to safeguard his children’s inheritance.
