Stanley was a devoted parish priest who was committed to the liberalisation of education. A Whig in politics and a reformer, he was unusual among the clergy for adopting toleration as his creed. In pamphlets published in 1829 and 1836, he attempted to encourage greater harmony between Catholics and Protestants.
