by Henry Meyer, after Joseph Wright

The writer, philosopher and gentleman farmer Thomas Day was the ultimate eighteenth-century 'man of feeling'. Holding radical views, he devoted himself to charity and to promoting fellow-feeling. He is best known for his children's book The History of Sandford and Merton (1783-9), which was intended to show young readers that moral behaviour would be rewarded. Day's other writings included pamphlets on social and philanthropic issues, such as The Dying Negro (1773) which aligned him with the anti-slavery movement.

Card size: 125mm x 175mm
