A leading Whig law reformer, Romilly had an unrivalled knowledge of the criminal law of Britain and the Continent. In 1789 he travelled to Paris where his enthusiasm for the French Revolution inspired his Letters Containing an Account of the Late Revolution in France (1792). Along with Sir Francis Burdett, he was one of a small group of progressive Whigs whole-heartedly in support of Parliamentary reform.
