Crossman left his position as a Classics don at Oxford to dedicate himself to politics and the Labour party. Between 1945 and 1974, he was MP for Coventry East. Crossman rose to political prominence in Harold Wilson's government as leader of the House of Commons and for his work in the Department of Health and Social Security between 1968 and 1970. His controversial and detailed Diaries of a Cabinet Minister, published posthumously, are a lasting legacy and an important record of twentieth-century British politics.
