Lady Astley was born into the aristocratic Delaval family and studied painting under the artist Arthur Pond from 1744 till 1750. Pond's portrait of Lady Astley is now in the National Portrait Gallery's collection. She painted a portrait of Jacob Astley, an ancestor of her husband, the politician Edward Astley's after a 17th century painting.
